High-Tech Skills to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals
In September 2020, Innopharma hosted a webinar entitled ‘High-Tech Skills
to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals as part of the sciencedigital@UNGA75 series of side events to mark the 75th anniversary of the United Nations
General Assembly.
Skills and up-skilling are critical requirements for the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and agenda 2030. A number of the SDGs foresee a post- Covid-19 environment where socio-economic progress is advanced through improved competitiveness, responding to socio-economic challenges and climate change as well as enabling pandemic preparedness, among other measures.
The objective of the webinar was to examine how, in a post-COVID-19 world, the UN and its international partners including the European Union and the African Union Commission, are preparing for the challenges ahead in order to protect existing employment and create new jobs. Skills experts from Kenya, South Africa, UK, Dubai and Yemen contributed to a lively debate discussing how COVID-19 has acted as a catalyst to accelerate change and momentum towards the digital economy. It was concluded that these developments will require new labour skills across a range of economic sectors.
